The University of California Riverside is a public research university and one of the ten main campuses of the UC system. Spanning across 1,900 acres of suburban Inland Empire, UC Riverside is one of the most acclaimed colleges in Southern California. Founded in 1907 - at the time known as the UC Citrus Experiment station - the college became famous for research in biological pest control and growth regulations. The city grew after the second World War, when a number of veterans returned from the service and enrolled in classes at the university.
UCR is among the most ethnically and economically diverse universities in the country. It is famed for it's outreach and retention programs, especially for LGBT students. Even when diversity at other Universities of California saw their numbers drop, the student body of UCR has only grown. They have spread out their focus and schools, expanding to a famed research collections on citrus entomology, science fiction, photography, and even recently beginning the accreditation process for the UC Riverside School of Medicine – making it the first new medical school to open in California in over forty years. The school is also nationally recognized for their graduate school programs - including the Graduate School of Education and the Bourns College of Engineering.
The school is a member of Big West Conference of the NCAA division 1. The teams associated with the school are known as the Highlanders, and have won tournaments across the Big West Conference for decades. The school is currently divided into four academic colleges, two professional schools, multiple interdisciplinary divisions, a college of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, a college of natural and Agricultural Sciences, a school of Business Administration, and the brand new medical school. Located close to the Box Spring Mountains, the school is one of the best spots for a student in Southern California.
